剧情描述一个恬静田园小镇的人口数经过百年后仍旧只有436个人。一位人口普查员奉命去调查此镇人口数百年不变的原因，调查过程中渐渐招致不可知的厄运......。Tom Barnaby joins the Causton Chamber of Commerce trip to Brighton as he is suspicious of dodgy mayor Hicks' plan to buy coastal land on which to buy chalets. Also opposed to the plan is Lady Matilda William,who has had threatening letters, as have the local vicar, oily property developer Hugh Dalgleish and hotelier Jenny Russell.
